Obituary for Susan Elizabeth Pittman

RALEIGH – Susan Elizabeth Pittman, age 63, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 16, 2017, from breast cancer. Born in Nash County, NC on April 4, 1953, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth Worth Pittman and Elizabeth Coleman Pittman. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Anne Pittman Hardison.

She attended Peace College and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was an elementary school teacher before attending North Carolina State University for a master’s degree in counseling. Susan was associated with Lynn Road Elementary and Wiley Elementary Schools in Wake County. In addition, she was a reading specialist for the Department of Public Instruction before retirement. In later years, she enjoyed substitute teaching at Lacy Elementary and Daniels Middle Schools and teaching summer school and tutoring at Trilogy School.

Susan gave her time and energy to various volunteer organizations through the years. She was a Stephen Minister at White Memorial Presbyterian Church, and a docent at the Governor’s Mansion. A Master Gardener, she loved working outdoors, watching her flowers blossom, and spying on fledgling bluebirds in her backyard. She could often be seen taking her beloved dog Gretel for walks around the neighborhood.

Susan was always in the middle of a good book and enjoyed keeping up with her book club. She also loved to travel, and found joy in planning and learning about the places she visited. She was able to enjoy all these activities up until her health rapidly declined. She never gave up her fight and will be remembered by her family for her thoughtfulness, affection, and spirit.

Susan leaves behind to cherish her memory, sister, Melissa Pittman Smyth and husband, Theodore Blackburn Smyth, of Raleigh; four nieces, Susan Hardison Thomsen and husband, Ryan; Elizabeth Smyth Bramley and husband, Timothy; Anne Rogers Smyth and fiancé, Reed Staub; and Margaret Blackburn Smyth; nephew, Andrew Worth Hardison and wife, Ashley; and brother-in-law, Richard Everett Hardison.

The family will have a private graveside service in Rocky Mount. A memorial service to celebrate Susan’s life will be held Tuesday, February 21, 2017, at 2:00 PM at White Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1704 Oberlin Road, Raleigh, NC 27608. There will be a visitation at the home of Melissa and Ted Smyth on Sunday, February 19, 2017, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the Stephen Ministry Program at White Memorial Presbyterian Church or the NC Botanical Garden at the University of North Carolina, Campus Box 3375, Chapel Hill, NC 27599.
